Divorce Law - Greenwich, CT

I was drawn to family law for many different reasons. For one, I always welcomed the unique challenges our clients bring to us. That's never changed for me. And there was a sense that we were helping people, instead of large and often anonymous companies and institutions. As lawyers we could have an impact on someone's life in a meaningful way, and in a relatively short time. Early in my career I handled complex labor and employment litigation -- those types of cases could drag on for many years, and that could be frustrating.

Our firm's primary objective is to settle cases out of court. When that is not possible, we are always prepared to take the disputed issues to court.

The landscape has changed dramatically since I started. There was a time when a divorce case never included phrases like "stock options" or "restricted stock units" - not any more. Once, there was no such thing as a hedge fund. Now our work involves addressing much more complex and opaque financial issues – today we work with an array of business appraisers, forensic evaluators, and investment and portfolio managers.

We will work with qualified financial advisors, too, often to address relatively straightforward questions: When should a spouse exercise those vested stock options that he or she suddenly owns? Those kinds of intelligent decisions can make a big difference.

Almost all of our cases these days include sophisticated financial issues. We are selective with our clients. By handling a small number of clients we can be there for them - all the time. We are always there to pick up the phone, to answer a call, to respond immediately to a question. All of our clients expect that - and deserve it.

Every lawyer has an original source of inspiration. Who made to want to become a lawyer? For me it was a Sunday School teacher, a friend of the family, named Dick Oviatt. He was a partner at Cummings & Lockwood, and was a respected member of the community. He looked like Kojak, and I thought he was pretty cool. Funny how you recall the memories that got you here.

I love what I do as much as when I started. Part of it is that I love the people I work with. We have an excellent team. That's makes all the difference in the world.
