John DeBartolo's many affiliations reflect his leadership role in the matrimonial bar, and in the broader legal community. He is immediate past chair of the Executive Committee of the state bar's Family Law Section, and has served in various capacities for the group for several years. He is also president-elect of the Monmouth Bar Association. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the New Jersey Bar, as well as a former trustee of the Monmouth County Association. For nearly two decades DeBartolo has served on the Early Settlement Panel of the Monmouth Bar Association and as a Blue Ribbon Panelist in complex cases. The New Jersey Supreme Court has appointed DeBartolo to two postings, as a member of the District IX Ethics Committee, and of the Family Practice Committee. He has lectured widely on divorce law at conferences of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education, and the New Jersey Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Attorneys.

"Contrary to what some people believe, we are seeing more contested divorces, which wind up in litigation, rather than fewer."

In November 2003 he briefed and argued the position of the New Jersey State Bar Association as amicus curae in the case of Wershams v. Wershams before the New Jersey Supreme Court.
