John P. Whiteman III
Divorce Law - Garden City, NY

I really am a blend of my parents. I get my sense of compassion from my mother, a nurse with experience in both hospitals and schools, and I get my business savvy from my father, a procurement specialist in the banking industry. They encouraged me to become a lawyer for as long as I can remember. I've relied on the compassion and savvy that I learned from them every day of my career.

I've developed an approach to my clients, which is the only way I've ever known how to be - honest. I'm a zealous advocate and a straight shooter. I truly believe that you can be both at the same time. Any lawyer who does not realistically guide a client through the process fails to serve that client's best interests.

My first conversation with all my clients is to listen to their story, to hear the unique facts and circumstances of their lives. I want to know where they came from, where they are now, and where they want to be. All of that establishes trust and understanding, and more than anything, I need my clients to trust me and for me to understand them and their goals. This way I can efficiently guide them through this difficult time in their lives.

There's no question that being a divorce lawyer is much more than practicing law. Informal, on-the-spot therapy is a vital part of the job as without that it is often difficult for clients to be able to make rational, informed decisions. You really need to be both lawyer and counselor.

I take a lot of pride in anticipating problems, particularly in the negotiation process. At settlement meetings, I can see where things are going. Much of that is simply being able to read people and understand their personalities - knowing how to handle situations and emotions. I'm good at it.

Every attorney at the firm has a different style. At the same time, we all bring sensitivity and respect to each matter that we handle by working as a true team. We are able to provide our clients with exceptional representation. I think that our clients - all of our clients, even those with the most contentious cases - recognize that and appreciate it.
