Divorce Law - Garden City, NY

One of the reasons I chose to focus on matrimonial law is that concentrating on the single discipline simply provides better service to clients. When divorce cases go awry - such as being bogged down in excessive litigation - it's often because one of the attorneys involved is not very well versed in divorce law or has the reputation of refusing to be reasonable - we all know who they are. Having attorneys who know the law and the process, tends to eliminate much of the posturing, chest-beating - and often the amount of litigation.

Another issue we face is unrealistic expectations - and some attorneys are willing to stoke them. For me it is fairly simple: If you want someone to tell you only what you want to hear, you've come to the wrong office. It is important that a client be told the truth from beginning to end. It is also critical that the client be informed as to what is transpiring, and why. I try and give them a primer on matrimonial law so they understand the process as it is occurring.

Long Island, with it's affluence and upward mobility, keeps us busy, but so have economic changes as well as increased animosity between litigants. There have also been many recent changes to the law in the area of support which affects spouses' rights and obligations. We are working with people when they are in the middle of a crisis. Being able to settle these cases, whether through mediation or usual settlement methods, in addition to having the ability to litigate and go to trial if need be, is crucial to client representation.

It's very rewarding work - and a truly noble and honorable profession. We are really coming to the assistance of people during a time when they are often undergoing the biggest crisis of their lives, and we help get them through it. Importantly, they are entitled to go through the process with their dignity intact.
