BIOGRAPHY Shrewd, hard-charging and charismatic, Joel Bender is widely regarded as one of the leading matrimonial attorneys in the region for the last 25 years. Immediately after graduating from Cornell Law School he worked with some of New York City's leading divorce attorneys, but after only five years launched his own practice. "I didn't have the temperament to work for someone else," says the competitive Bender, who has twice completed the New York Marathon and competed in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. Now, beginning his fifth decade as a divorce attorney, the New York native has steadily built a successful practice - and reputation - over that time, taking on some of the region's high-profile and complex cases. |

Capable of blunt talk ("I have no problem saying what's on my mind") and a soft touch ("Our job is to try to de-escalate hostilities," he says), Bender today is known as one of the most experienced in the field; in great demand, Bender is forced to refer away many of the cases that come to him. A longtime Democrat, Bender has been active in Westchester County politics since the 1960s and supports various progressive causes. He lives in Bedford, N.Y.
