Divorce Law - White Plains, NY

I have seen a tremendous evolution in the law - and in the divorce process itself - since I began my practice. Prior to the creation of equitable distribution statutes, if one spouse owned title to a property, that spouse simply took the property. Today, the marital pie is being sliced more fairly, and the current laws support that.

There's more to it, of course. Roles have changed. Today many fathers have a much more hands-on approach to their children; they take time off from work to take their kids to the pediatrician. Those kinds of social changes contribute to different issues and different outcomes of many divorces.

Confronting and facing up to hard-edged emotions has always been part of what we do. When a spouse focuses on hatred and revenge, it simply destroys their own life, no one else's. The best revenge, I tell my clients, is living a good and satisfying life. That's what a proper settlement contributes to.

A spouse can see their ego destroyed from a divorce. That's why we consider the post-divorce environment in everything we assess, and negotiate. After a settlement, I may encourage a spouse who had been at home to get work - having a new job creates a new world, and opens up social opportunities. It's a way to rebuild yourself, to get constructive personal feedback. After spouses battle for years over such things as control and money, I've seen people make deep personal - and often positive -- change in a divorce.

I work closely with my clients, to work with them for a fair settlement that can endure. I help them arrive at their own decisions, to reach a resolution that will serve them best.

In my practice I'm very hands-on - I call my clients back promptly, and listen - frequently and carefully. I know, it may sound hard to believe, but I love what I do.
