Divorce Law - Fredericksburg, VA

I was drawn to divorce law because it gives us the opportunity to really help people. Family law doesn't always get the respect it deserves. There is a heavy emotional dynamic to the cases we handle. As family lawyers, we give meaning to the phrase, "counselor at law," and it is that role which makes the work so gratifying.

I bring a discipline, thoroughness and preparation to my work, anticipating that every case may eventually be tried. But outcome in a courtroom is often unpredictable, and the rulings are highly discretionary. It is this unpredictability that is, and ought to be, strong motivation for working out a settlement. I tell my clients that by pursuing a settlement you will better control the outcome.

I make it a point to tell my clients what they need to know, not what they want to hear. And I counsel my clients to be honest and upfront.

One of the most interesting things about practicing in the Washington area is that we see such a broad range of people - and cases. There's great diversity - of backgrounds, and of experiences. That diversity has made me better at what I do.

I've always been good at defusing conflict and tension. It's just my nature. If someone comes in with a high level of anger, part of my job is to "lower the temperature." I have a reputation for maintaining an even temperament - and I'm proud of that.

Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia are a long way from Colorado, but I have always been adventurous. Colleagues regard me as a "fearless litigator." I suppose that is an extension of my sense of independence and self-reliance. I have always enjoyed the challenge of the courtroom and the agility that comes with having to think on your feet.
