Divorce Law - Fairfax, VA

The first thing you may notice about me is that I am fairly direct and straightforward - I work to be a problem solver, a fixer. And as my partners know I am pretty even-keeled - if I get agitated over an issue, it's for a good and obvious reason. Lawyers and judges who know me know I am not inclined to engage in posturing.

Choosing your divorce attorney is a big decision, bigger than many realize. Much of the success of any client-lawyer relationship is based on mutual trust. In that respect, it's very important for me to have a personal connection with the client, really from the first conversation. After all, what's the point in being retained by someone - or representing someone - who doesn't trust you?

A fair number of clients come to me with firm ideas of how their case will play out - that is, they've scanned the internet, talked to friends and family, and watched some television shows, and pretty much convinced themselves of a certain scenario. They feel they have it all figured out.

My job from the start is to bring them some perspective - to explain some realistic scenarios of what may happen, and why. I don't pretend to have all the answers. But my experience can help assess their issues, as well as the risks versus the costs of pursuing certain strategies. Simply put, I would advise against spending a lot of resources on an outcome that is unlikely or improbable.

Part of that thinking has to do with the fact that courts don't always do what you think they'll do. In my early years I probably went to court more frequently. But the fact is, to some extent I can anticipate how a certain judge will rule, and that can be a factor in how we proceed. As you gain experience, and practice longer, you may even be less likely to litigate. And there is a lot of value in that for the client.

There's no doubt that my own life experience has influenced how I practice today. I know how I felt and what I saw when my own parents split up. Those early-life emotions and perspectives really make a difference in how I approach my clients' cases. I know the idea of "the children's best interests" first hand. I think it has just made me more personally invested.

Today I work with people I like and respect. All are very good attorneys. And I think we've really built on Bob Shoun's legacy, bringing his principals of respect and integrity to every case. I know there are firms out there where people dread going to work Monday mornings. I don't have that problem. The people I trust most in my profession are right here. They are all first-rate lawyers and we have an amazing group of support staff who really help clients along the way, too. I tap into their expertise - and do good work for my clients because of it. I'm very proud of that.
